Ru Yao – a variety of Chinese celadon, with a thick matte glaze covered by a fine crackle network. The lost technique of making such vessels was relatively recently revived, at the end of the 20th century. Since then, Ru Yao ceramics have quickly gained popularity both in China and abroad. Production is increasing, shapes are becoming more complex, and the skills are being perfected.

The Ru Yao technique originated during the Song dynasty (960–1279 AD), and was later produced in kilns in the Ru prefecture, in what is now Henan province. Ru Yao celadon became famous for its simple, nearly decoration-less texture and the crackle network (crackle glaze) running all over the surface of the pieces.

One should note that the texture of the items is “alive.” The surface of Ru Yao is not coated with transparent glazing. Therefore, when the vessels are used for tea drinking, the crackle network gradually changes color to brown. Tea infusions penetrate into the cracks, fully oxidize there, and darken. The vessels age visibly through everyday use, as the crackle pattern becomes increasingly noticeable.
