Celadon Ceramic Gaiwan – Hammered Ice Texture, Handcrafted

A handcrafted celadon gaiwan with a distinctive “hammered ice” texture and elegant finish.

Made in the Ru Yao style – a Chinese celadon tradition characterized by thick, matte glaze covered with a delicate web of fine cracks (craquelure). The lost art of Ru Yao ceramics was revived in the late 20th century and has since regained popularity both in China and internationally. As craftsmanship has improved, so has the complexity and beauty of the forms.

The Ru Yao technique dates back to the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD), originally produced in kilns of the Ru region (modern-day Henan Province). It is renowned for its simple, ornament-free surfaces and the unique crackle glaze covering the entire piece.

A special feature of Ru Yao is that its texture is alive — it’s not covered with a clear top glaze. Over time, tea seeps into the fine cracks during use, oxidizing and gradually turning the lines brown. With daily use, the vessel ages visibly, gaining depth and character as the crackle pattern darkens and becomes more prominent.
