Celadon Ceramic Gaiwan with Hill Motif – Ru Yao Style

A handcrafted celadon gaiwan featuring a subtle hill design, made in the traditional Ru Yao style. The thick, matte glaze is covered with a delicate network of fine cracks (craquelure) that slowly evolve with use, making each piece truly unique.

Ru Yao is a historic Chinese celadon technique that originated during the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) in the kilns of the Ru region, now part of Henan Province. Its understated texture and iconic crackled glaze earned it great recognition in imperial China. The lost art of Ru Yao ceramics was revived in the late 20th century and has since regained wide popularity both in China and around the world.

One of the most fascinating qualities of Ru Yao is its “living texture.” As the vessel is used, tea slowly penetrates the fine cracks, oxidizes, and darkens them over time. With daily use, the craquelure pattern becomes more visible, giving the gaiwan a rich, aged character.
